When Justin and Hailey Bieber first met in 2009, they had no idea about the romance that would unfold between them in the years ahead – eventually leading to them tying the knot in 2018.

Unfortunately, their relationship wasn't all smooth sailing and came with a lot of hiccups, including a brief period where they broke up and a whole host of rumours that Hailey "stole" the Intentions singer from former Disney star Selena Gomez – speculation that has plagued her to this very day, leading to an onslaught of online bullying.

Hailey was left at her wit's end earlier this year as she begged trolls on TikTok: "Leave me alone at this point. I'm minding my business. I don't do anything, I don't say anything. Leave me alone, please." The model and skincare entrepreneur also recently addressed the claims of breaking up the popular Justin and Selena romance, stating on the Call Her Daddy podcast that she was "raised better" than stealing someone else's man.

2009

This is where it all started as a 12-year-old Hailey was introduced to Justin by her father, Stephen Baldwin, backstage on The Today Show. The meeting was as awkward as you would expect from the youngsters, and any hint of their future romance was nowhere to be detected.

2011

Two years later, Stephen brought his daughter Hailey to the red carpet premiere of Bieber's movie Never Say Never. Cue another awkward photoshoot for the cameras (with dad Stephen included). There were still no signs of their romance, as later that year, the Baby singer confirmed his relationship with actress Selena Gomez.

Hailey showed her support for Justin and Selena's romance at the time, writing in a now-deleted tweet in May 2011: "I don't care what anyone says but Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez together is the definition of a teenage dream! #word." A few months later, she added: "I'm for sure 100% team #Jelena."

2014

While Justin and Selena found themselves on a relationship break, Hailey got to know the Canadian superstar better through her close friendship with Kendall Jenner. The trio, Jenner, Bieber and Baldwin, were regularly spotted at the Hillsong Church in New York City, leading to their dating rumours. However, Hailey shut down speculation at the time, telling E! News: "He's just going through a time in his life where he's transitioning in a really positive way, and he needs good people around him. And I'm trying to be a good friend and be there for him and support him."

2015

Hailey and Justin continued to hang out during a Mexican getaway and even rang in New Year together in Anguilla.

2016

Hailey and Justin's friendship transitioned into a relationship, and the pair confirmed their romance with a snap of them kissing on Instagram. However, they both attempted to downplay the romance, with Hailey telling E! News: "He's about to go on tour. Relationships at this age are already complicated, but I don't really like to talk about it because it's between me and him."

Meanwhile, Justin told GQ that he was too busy for a relationship. "I already have a lot that I have to commit to. A lot of responsibilities. I don't want to feel like the girl I love is an added responsibility."

Unfortunately, later that year, the pair split and Justin was rumoured to date Sofia Richie for a brief six-week period. Reflecting on the split, Hailey told The Times in 2018 that they "went through a long period of time when we weren't friends" because "there was a lot of weirdness that went on."

2018

Following Bieber's brief reconciliation with Selena, he got back with Hailey, who said that their love for church brought them back together. Speaking to Vogue that year, Hailey said: "The common denominator, I promise you, is always church. By then, we were past the drama. I just gave him a hug. By the end of the conference, he was like, 'We're not going to be friends.' I was like, 'We're not?'"

In July 2018, the pair shocked fans by announcing their engagement! The singer popped the question during a romantic getaway to the Bahamas. Confirming the happy news on Instagram, Justin gushed: "Hailey I am soooo in love with everything about you! So committed to spending my life getting to know every single part of you loving you patiently and kindLY. The pair offered insight into their marriage, telling Vogue's March issue: "When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life. I was like, 'Holy cow, this is what I've been looking for.'" They also divulged they waited until marriage to have sex.

Justin opened up about his marriage to Hailey, stating in his Seasons docu-series that getting "to share my life with [Hailey] just makes it so much more rewarding."

Hailey added: "He was the first person I ever had real feelings for. When things kind of went south for a little bit, and we went our separate ways, I just knew that no matter what the outcome was going to be, he was going to be somebody that I loved for the rest of my life. No matter what, he was always going to hold a special place in my heart."

Hailey admitted to WSJ Magazine that she "definitely" isn't ready for kids yet. "I think ideally, in the next couple of years, we would try. But there's a reason they call it try, right? You don't know how long that process is ever going to take. Definitely no kids this year; that would be a little bit hectic, I think," she said.

Months later, in May, Justin admitted that he went through an "emotional breakdown" early on in his marriage. "It's a journey. I remember when I first got married, I hit a little bit of an emotional breakdown because I thought marriage was going to fix all my problems, and it didn't," Justin said on Apple Music's Ebro Darden. "It just kind of was a reflection of like, man, you're a bit of a hypocrite, man."
